Top Places > itxina
Itxina is a wonderful example of karstic formations. From the air, it looks like a rocky plateau that rises from its environment, creating a ridge with edges trying to protect the concave inside. The highest point of the ridge's rocks is Lekanda (1.302m). In the South, Altipiatz and Arteta are brought out, and in the North, Aizkorrigane. At the bottom of it, inside, a group of sharp peaks raises: the Atxas ("haitza"= rock).
In the northeastern side of the karst, you can find the easiest access into it, through the 'ojo de Atxular', which has always been used by spherds (who also have their cabins and sheepfolds in Itxina) and woodcutters. However, it is advised against going deep without someone who knows the area properly, due to the lack of paths and guidance features in the landscape. You especially have to pay attention to this appeal in case of fog, which is very frequent in this environment. Among the caves in Itxina, the one of Supelegor, dwelling of characters from the Basque mythology, is brought out.
In Itxina, you feel at the top, youcan watch the stars, discover a unique geology, hear what the wind has to tell you, and even scream as much as you want...
